While watching the grand finale of cookery reality show Masterchef India, season 4 a couple of days back, I was as much in ‘asmanjas’ (a state of shock) as was Chef Vikas Khanna, who was judging the show. The main reason behind my state of mind was the fact that everyone in the show was trying really hard to be what he was not.
Starting from the host, usually arrogant and straight forward Raghu Ram, trying to be Mr.Goody Two Shoes, to the final contestants shaking their booty wearing skimpy attires to the judges who push the envelop further and tried really hard to be the rockstars of the night. Being versatile and trying something new is good, but my question was all that needed? I remember even the judges justifying the contestants performances by calling them befitting the celebration. Like really?! TV stars’ sensual moves weren’t enough to raise the TRPs? Or it was an attempt to open newer avenues for the Masterchef girls (read Nach Baliye) ala Ripu Daman, the winner of last season of Masterchef, who later on participated in the dance reality show?
A lot happened during the Grand Finale of Masterchef India Season 4 besides announcing Dubai based Nikita Gandhi as the winner. From plugging in the promotion of upcoming movie Tanu Weds Manu Returns to introducing the judges of the dance reality show, Nach Baliye. It was these judges that opened the can of worms and made me write this post. How Chetan Bhagat, (whose fiction novels double up as Bollywood movie scripts) has anything to do with judging a dance reality show? That brings me to Preity Zinta. Sorry to say that but Chef Vikas Khanna was dancing better than the actress. What happened to the Farahs, Vaibhavis and Remos of Bollywood? (Oh, Farah Khan is busy cooking up a storm these days in her celebrity cookey show titled, Farah Ki Dawat). Madhuri Dixit and Shilpa Shetty will be missed. RIP, dancing!
On a different level, Nach Baliye has a history of committing bloopers, when it comes to choosing judges. Remember, Arjun Rampal too judged one of the seasons? And how can we forget Sajid Khan?! Being a choreographer's brother doesn’t qualify you as a judge of a dance show.
Yet another popular celebrity judge who is all set to stand out as a sore thumb is Sonakshi Sinha. The Dabangg girl will soon be seen judging the popular singing reality show, Indian Idol Junior along with Vishal Merchant and Samir Merchant. "Enough guessing!! HAPPY to announce #ShotgunJunior is going to be a part of Indian Idol Junior," announced an ecstatic Sonakshi on Twitter. Can it get bizzare than this, we wonder!
Fresh out of her Bigg Boss 7 stint, actress Tanisha Mukerjee found herself judging a comedy show, Gangs of Haseepur. Obviously, she was a bad choice and both the audiences and the makers were not very happy with her act.
Arbaaz Khan followed brother Sohail Khan into judging a comedy based reality show. However, he ended up giving strange judgments, which were neither positive nor negative but bordering confusion.
I’m not digging in further but there are plenty of examples that prove that Indian shows have a long way to go when it comes to choose befitting judges. Till then, let’s see Sonakshi talking ragas and Chetan Bhagat swearing by salsa moves!
