8 Facts You Need to Know About This Week’s Release, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy Ft. Sushant Singh Rajput

Contributed By: Charu A. Mahesh

As Dibaker Banerjee gears up to give India its first detective movie in this week’s big release, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy, starring Sushant Singh Rajput, here are a few facts that you must know about the film…

1.   If you have noticed, the surname ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy’ has a ‘Y’ instead or ‘I,’ in the film, as against the name of the legendary detective Byomkesh Bakshi, it was done on purpose. No of astrological or numerological reasons but because director Dibaker Banerjee wanted a ‘typographical balance. 'I' appeared "too thin" so they picked 'y,' which was a "stronger alphabet".

2.   If Dhoom 3 had not happened, Aamir Khan would have made his debut as a villain in Detective Byomkesh Bakshy. Director wanted a villain who could give competition to Byomkesh and he couldn’t think of a better star than Aamir Khan to play the baddie. The face of the villain has been kept under wraps by the makers.

 3.    The Shanghai director, has bought the rights of all 33 Byomkesh Bakshi stories written by celebrated Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. Which means, chances of Byomkesh Bakshy franchise are pretty high!

4.    Mardaani star, Rani Mukherjee was initially approached to play the female lead in the film. However, she turned it down as the film had some bold scenes. The role finally went to Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee.

 5. Talking about bold scenes, Swastika and Sushant share a passionate kiss in the film, which is touted to be the longest. However, the director has different plans for the lip-lock.  "I am thinking of cutting the kissing scene from the film because just to watch that particular scene people will miss the scene and the dialogues," said Dibaker in one of the recent interviews.

6.  Sushant Singh Rajput is also playing Indian cricket captian, Mahendra Singh Dhoni calls Detective Byomkesh Bakshy as his best performance till date.

 7.  Since the film is a suspense thriller, the villain and climax of the film are kept under wraps. However, recently there was a buzz about a video leak that revealed the film's climax. While a few call it a pivotal marketing strategy, the makers call it a mishap.

8.    While the characters and setting are inspired by the book, what’s different is the American army, and the opium trade angle. The book had no mention of the international plot, but the fact is this did happen in the Calcutta of the 1940s. Also, Dibaker has tried to maintain modernity in the film by staying away from traditional style of communication. Dibakar’s grammar and the music is very contemporary as they are catering to the youth of today.

Bollywood Box Office Report for First Quarter of 2015: Hits & Misses

Contributed By: Charu A. Mahesh

The first quarter of 2015 is already over. That was fast, isn't it? From exams and financial year closing to World Cup frenzy - all the hullaballoo seems to have settled by now. Which reminds us that Bollywood box office can now expect some wonders as the first quarter turned out to be a disappointing one with no blockbusters, and a majority of debacles.

          Varun Dhawan in Badlapur poster

Out of a total of 30 films that released in the first three months, only four films managed to win audience's heart. Now, that's a pretty bad score! What went wrong? Let's find out.

With lack of Khan films and with just one Akshay 'Khiladi' Kumar film, Baby, the first quarter didn't have much to offer to the masses. Imagine not even a single 100 crore film yet and just small fries like 'NH 10' and 'Badlapur', which managed make some profit, but since these films didn't have a mass appeal, the first quarter can be called just average.

      Baby Poster

"It has not been a great period. The first quarter has not been fruitful, especially when you compare it with the previous year, it has been quite bad. We had a major release like 'Jai Ho' last year. This year, there was no such major film," says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

The four movies that managed to swift through the lull include Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Akshay Kumar's Baby, Varun Dhawan starrer Badlapur and Anushka Sharma's NH 10.

            Anushka Sharma in NH10 poster

Blaming it to the quality of content produced rather than events, Komal Nahta, another film trade expert, said, "I would say the first quarter has not been good at all, and that doesn't mean any film that deserves to do well, has flopped. All the films that have flopped, deserved to flop. It has been a below average year."

         Dum Laga Ke Haisha poster

Box Office Report: Talking about business, Neeraj Pandey's Baby collected close to Rs.80 crore, Sharat Katariya's Dum Laga Ke Haisha collected around Rs.27 crore and still seems to be going steady at the box office. Sriram Raghavan's Badlapur managed Rs.50 crore, and Anushka Sharma's debut production NH10 drew crowds and garnered around Rs.27 crore so far.

So what was it that went wrong? Analysing what went wrong this year, Adarsh said: "The examination period, and most importantly, the Cricket World Cup (which began February 14) was going on. I do feel all these factors have affected the business drastically. We also need to pull up our socks in terms of content."

      Dolly ki Doli

The fact that movies like Tevar, which starred Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha, Bipasha Basu starrer Alone, Sonam Kapoor's Dolly Ki Doli, Ayushmann Khurrana's Hawaiizada, Roy starring Ranbir Kapoor and above all Amitabh Bachchan starrer Shamitabh failed to make a mark at the Box Office proves that audiences expect more from a movie than just star power.

Other films that tanked without a trace included, Mumbai Can Dance Sala, Crazy Cukkad Family,  Dirty Politics,  Hey Bro,  Khamoshiyaan, Rahasya and Ab Tak Chappan 2 to name a few.

Even experimenting with genres couldn't pull the audiences to the theatre as the genre was not exploited fully. For instance, Alone and Khamoshiyan failed to scare the audiences, while an inspiring film like Hawaaizada tanked as it lost the plot in between and focused more on love story. Similarily, so called comedies like Crazy Cukkad Family, Hey Bro and Dilli Wali Zaalim Girlfriend failed to make us laugh as they piggy backed on run on the mill jokes and slapstick comedy.

           Roy Poster

Rajasthan-based distributor Sunil Bansal says this year has put distributors in loss and it was small budget films that managed to work.

"Small budget films have done fairly well this year, but their performance has not been exceptionally great. Many distributors have faced a huge loss this year as shows were going empty and we had to pull down many shows. However, these four films (mentioned earlier) have been saviours."

            Gabbar Is Back Poster

Will the second quarter of 2015 manage to bring fizz back in Bollywood? Will cash registers ring again? Answers Nahta, "There aren't too many promising films on the horizon. Good times will begin from June and July. Having said that, there is a film like 'Gabbar Is Back' which could do well. It's not that we are flooded with promising films."

"Do you wanna know, which are the must-watch films in the next quarter of 2015? Watch this space to find out.

Curious Case of Sunny Leone: Jo Dikhta Hai, Woh Bikta Hai! | Upcoming Movies of Sunny

Contributed By: Charu A. Mahesh

At a time when women oriented films (Mary Kom, Queen) in Bollywood are winning laurels and actresses like Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut are taking home National Awards, there’s Sunny Leone, who is busy churning out heroine-oriented films of a different kind.

Even her films sell because of ‘Her’ just like her counterparts’ but not because of superlative acting skills but her unmatchable sex appeal. Perhaps, she is the only actress in Bollywood whose paving her way up in Bollywood piggy backing solely on her sensuality. After all, getting to play lead roles in as many as five upcoming Bollywood films is no joke! Jo dikhta hai, wo bikta hai #readsomewhere and it suits the porn star turned Bollywood actress, Sunny Leone so damn well!

Bollwood has seen many a sex symbols in the past. In the yesteryears; it was the vamp’s (Bindu, Aruna Irani, Helen) domain to woo the audiences with her oomph and sex appeal, while heroines were happy playing the good girls. Soon we saw the heroines jumping the line and doing it all. However, the vamps could never become mainstream and main stream actresses couldn’t resist the temptation of performance oriented roles and kept their sex appeal strictly for script’s demand. No one has thrived entirely on the power of sex and seduction like Sunny Leone. In fact, film makers are writing scripts not for her but for her hawtness! Mallika Sherawat seemed to be treading Sunny path at one point in time, but she got lost somewhere.

Sunny’s rise in Bollywood is not a fluke, though it can definitely be linked to the kick that anything ‘imported’ and ‘p@rn’ written over it gives to the Indian men. Mainstream movie makers might avoid the sex-y Sunny but a different kind of cinema will always run on her name. After all she’s coming straight out of the forbidden and it’s human nature to get lured by the forbidden.

Here are the upcoming movies, where Sunny Leone will be playing the lead:

1.    Ek Paheli Leela

All set to release on April 10, Ek Paheli Leela is a musical thriller that stars Sunny Leone in a titular lead role with five men including Jay Bhanushali of Hate Story 2, Rajneesh Duggal, Jas Arora, Mohit Alhawat and Rahul Dev. Sunny’s item number ‘Desi Look’ from Ek Paheli Leela is already ruling the music charts, we hope the film also impresses the audiences. After all, from taking a bath with 100 liters of milk to mimicking Rajinikanth, the actress has done it all in the film.

Ek Paheli Leela release date: April 10, 2015

2.    Kuch Kuch Locha Hai (KKLH)

This one is a comedy that will see TV actor Ram Kapur, who was last seen in Sajid Khan’s disaster Humshakals romancing Sunny Leone. Indeed a privilege for Ram! Hope he’s able to handle the excitement ;) Kuch Kuch Locha Hai (KKLH) also stars Evelyn Sharma and Navdeep Chabbra. Touted as a sexy comedy, KKLH has Sunny playing a film star.

Kuch Kuch Locha Hai release date: May 8, 2015

3.    Tina and Lolo

Directed by Devang Dholakia, Tina and Lolo stars Sunny Leone and Karishma Tanna of Bigg Boss fame in lead roles. This one is an action film and the two girls have refused to use body doubles for doing stunts. Till any further updates enjoy the first look of Tina and Lolo.

4. One Night Stand

The queen of titillation also has a movie titled ‘One Night Stand’ in her kitty. While the name hints it to be an erotica but the film actually is an intense drama, where Sunny will be seen playing a girl next door for a change. And if you are wondering who is going to have a one night stand with Sunny? It is Tanuj Virvani, son of yesteryear’s actress Rati Agnihotri.

One Night Stand release date June 2015.

5. Mastizaade

This one is going to be extra special for Sunny’s fans as the film has a double dose of Sunny! Yes, you’ll see her playing double role in the sex comedy along with Tusshar Kapoor and Vir Das.

Mastizaade release date May 1, 2015

Here's the picture, which was clicked when Bipasha Basu was merely 15 years old and had just started her modelling career. Have you seen such a gorgeous looking 15 years old?
