Chaurahen Movie Review

'Chaurahen' Movie Review:  Chaurahen - Crossroads is one new experiment, which deals with three separate relationships that are intertwined through love, loss, light drizzles and destiny.

The four stories, originally written by Nirmal Varma, come together in a mysterious melange of pain, longing and tentative redemption in "Chaurahen". In her other film  "Aisha", director Rajshree Ojha gave us no clue of her affinity to such an intimate contact with the deepest recesses of the human heart. "Aisha" ended up being as  shallow as its Jane Austin-derived protagonist.

Dare we say the characters in "Chaurahen" are as thought-provoking as the writer-director's vision of a life in the metros? Under the bustling soundtrack (from  Rabindra Sangeet to Carnatic sangeet), there's an all-pervasive stillness at the core of the stories that crisscross so effortlessly in "Chaurahen". The characters are  all living with ghosts, reluctant and afraid to let go of their past and live in the present.

Each of the four stories is steeped in nostalgia, pain and a final redemption (the airport finale feels fake).

Paan Singh Tomar Movie Review

Paan Singh Tomar Movie Review: Tigmanshu Dhulia does it again! After the cinematic treat that Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster was, this year the man traces the life-story of Paan Singh Tomar(PST) - from being a selfless army man to a National level athlete to an equally celebrated dacoit (rebel) as Paan Singh addresses himself.

A biopic, especially on someone with as less historical support as PST, demands grueling research and Dhulia deserves a pat on his back for doing his homework well and telling Tomar’s tale in the most impactful and entertaining style.

And besides, Dhulia if there is someone else who deserves adulation for this fine piece of cinema is lead actor Irrfan Khan, who is awe-inspiring. You just can’t take your eyes off the screen when the actor is in the frame. It is a pleasure to see him depicting pleasure and pathos of Paan Singh at various stages of life (from late teens to his 50s) through his intense eyes and expressions.

Dhulia has beautifully captured the transformation of the innocent Tomar, who flirts with his wife (Mahie Gill) has Japanese female fan into a merciless outlaw. Despite all his ruthless ways, your heart goes out to PST and his gang of goons - for the simple fact that he is what our unjust society has made him.
Performance wise, the film has a lot to offer.

Mahie Gill's performance in Paan Singh Tomar: Mahie Gill who plays Tomar's wife is brilliant as a restrained woman. Despite having less screen space, she has managed to shine out. All other supporting cast including Vipin Sharma and Rajendra Gupta bring their share of brilliance to the film.

Some of the remarkable scenes in the film include – When Tomar agrees to give away his sport for the good of his coach’s daughter, Irrfan is brilliant in the phone-conversation with his senior, who rewards him with a final ice cream. And last but not the least, after he kills his enemy – the way Irrfan expresses his anger and frustration at being left without answers is simply praiseworthy.

Kahaani Movie Review

Kahaani Movie ReviewWho needs a Kapoor or Khan, when there’s Balan!

After a series of commendable performances in movies like No One Killed JessicaIshqiya and The Dirty Picture, Vidya Balan establishes herself as the ‘S’Hero of Indian Cinema, with her latest offering ‘Kahaani.’- Another award winning performance!

A suspense-thriller at heart, Kahaani scores on the fact that it makes you feel like a kid busy solving a jig-saw puzzle. Just when you feel that you are almost there, director Sujoy Ghosh throws another surprise! And there you are astounded by the completely ‘unpredictable end’ of this Kahaani

Talking about performances in Kahaani:
Vidya Balan in Kahaani: Vidya shines in intense breakdown moments as well as the lighter ones with equal ease and perfection. She is excellent playing a woman who is smart, vulnerable, depressed, determined and heavily pregnant of course!

Besides, Parambrata as sub-inspector Rana and Vidya’s companion can expect a Best Supporting Actor nomination for a balanced performance. We quite liked Nawazuddin Siddique’s (Khan) character for remaining shrewd till the end, though performance wise he was average. However, Saswata Chaterjee, who played the devilishly terrifying bespectacled contract killer Bob Biswas for giving a hateworthy performance. Indraneil Sengupta is impressive in the challenging role. The child actors are natural.

On the whole, this intriguing, gripping and entertaining Kahaani by Sujoy Ghosh is a must watch! And mind you, you’ll forget Vidya’s Dirty act with this stellar performance!

Kahaani  Buzz Rating: 3.5/5

Kahaani  Director: Sujoy Ghosh
