Upcoming Telugu thriller 'Malupu' inspired by true incident: Director Sathya Prabhas

Upcoming Telugu thriller "Malupu", which features Aadhi Pinisetty in the lead, is inspired by a real incident that happened over a decade ago, says its director Sathya Prabhas Pinisetty.

"It's about an incident that happened to my friends, and it changed their perspective about life completely. I wanted to make the film in such a way that the people involved in the incident and audiences could relate to it. If it can change someone's life, I thought it's a good story to be made and told onscreen," Sathya told IANS.

The film's story revolves around four friends and the repercussion of the incident on their lives.

True stories aren't easy to recreate for celluloid, and the director, who is making his debut with Telugu movie "Malupu", agrees.

"Try to be as honest as possible to the incident. Having said that, you can't exactly replicate it because you need to take some creative freedom and add some fiction to it. You need to choose what you want to narrate before the incident and what after it.

"A movie is usually about putting together few events that audiences can relate to and lose themselves as they watch. They shouldn't think they're watching a film. They should feel it. This script that I worked on, gave me all the ingredients and I just had to present it in an interesting manner," Sathya Prabhas continued.

Sathya is the son of celebrated Telugu filmmaker Raviraja Pinisetty, who is popular for films such as "Chanti", "Peddarayudu" and "Yamudiki Mogudu".

Making inroads in the film industry was not a challenge for Sathya, but convincing his father definitely was. "Being in the industry, dad knows the pros and cons. He's seen the biggest of hits and the failures," he said.

Sathya's folks always thought he would safely end up in a lucrative corporate job.

"I was a very good student and topped in my school and college. I even did my MBA in London. I had a very attractive corporate career inviting me and had the kind of job offers many people would not say no to," he said.

But a visit to his father's film set a few years ago ignited the spark in him.

Having decided not to piggyback on his father's popularity, Sathya went and enrolled himself into American Film Institute. The rest fell in place.

"Malupu", which is produced by Sathya's father, features his brother Aadhi in the lead. It also stars Nikki Galrani and Mithun Chakraborty in important roles.

Tragedy of Malayalam Cinema: 'Most new Malayali producers don't even own houses'

Did you know that over 100 Malayalam films are made every year, but it is not a cash rich industry...? Strange...hard to digest...?

The new producers of Kerala often sell property or borrow money to make films, says a distributor from the Southern state.

"The total investment on films last year was Rs.300 crore. And most new producers either borrow money or sell their property. Most of them don't own a house also," distributor Mukesh Mehta said here during a session on "Cinemas of India - Malayalam Cinema" at the ongoing Film Bazaar here.

Satellite rights was one way for producers to earn profit, but the trend is coming down, says G. Suresh Kumar, producer and president of Kerala Film Producers Association.

"Around 60 to 70 percent of money spent on a film used to be recovered from satellite. Many producers even earned profits. But the trend came down from last year. Around 125 Malayalam films are lying without satellite rights because the quality of those films are poor.

"Many filmmakers just take a digital camera and shoot a film so that also affects the quality of the films," said Kumar, who also shared that approximately 123 Malayalam films released this year and the figure may go up to 135 Malayalam movies.

But there are various advantages of making films in Kerala.

"We don't have a big budget like Tamil or Hindi films, but the audience appreciates our films. And we don't have pirated CDs for Malayali films. The distribution system is also easy in Kerala. There are no restrictions on screening timings also. You can start showing from 3 a.m. and go on the entire day," said Mehta.

Director Anil Radhakrishnan Menon of "North 24 Kaatham" fame says the audience of his state are "judgemental and critical".

"They watch everything including Korean films, so they are very critical about films we make. They like what they can relate to. Movies which show reality and not fantasy fiction works for them," he said.

Producer A.V. Anoop believes that to make Malayalam film industry prosperous, it is important to "look at outside market".
